I saw this on my social media feed today and I struggle with this too!

Confusion Level: Finnish

Is the image implying -pa an ending? Kauppa is the basic form of the word, without endings. I thought the dashes might be strictly phonetic syllable breaks, but then why not ta-lo and ta-lois-sa? Either way it’s confusing

Yes, it should be:

kauppa ‘the-shop’
kauppa-ni ‘my shop’
kaupa-ssa ‘in the-shop’
kaupa-ssa-ni ‘in my shop’
kaupo-i-ssa ‘in the-shops’
kaupo-i-ssa-ni ‘in my shops’

Morphemes don’t follow syllable breaks. And the thing is that word stems themselves change depending on certain rules, such as consonant gradation and vowel changes. Talo is a rare example of a word where this kind of confusing crap doesn’t happen. @finnishfun @sinunen
