pensversusswords:

You know what I want? More content where younger Tony actually goes to his classes, engages with professors and pays attention during lectures. Yes, Tony is a super genius and I’m sure that there are plenty of times when he zones out because he understands things so damn quickly, but I feel like sometimes we forget how thirsty for knowledge Tony is. He skipped a bunch of grades, went to MIT when he was incredibly young… he must have reached a level where he was at least semi challenged by his classes. I mean, being a genius doesn’t mean that he came preprogrammed with all the information he would ever need.

I want to see Tony meeting his profs at MIT, admiring them and being genuinely excited to learn from them. They are geniuses themselves, and have been in the field decades longer than Tony has even been alive. I want them to see the potential in Tony and pushing him by giving this mouthy, rich 16 year old hard questions and helping him figure them out. I want to see Tony cultivating his genius while also learning how to problem solve when he gets to a problem he can’t figure out right away. I want to see Tony stumped, having to go to his professors and ask them questions because hey, he’s a genius, but it never hurts to get a second opinion. I want Tony learning that his intelligence is a tool that he has to learn how to use properly, and that he didn’t come equipped with all of the answers to everything. Maybe it takes a little while for him to adjust to not being the person with the most knowledge in the room, but it quickly becomes his goal to absorb all of the knowledge that he can from everyone he meets. I want Tony who just loves learning, and yeah, sometimes he’ll meet an asshole who he knows he’s smarter than, and he gets a kick out of showing them up… but ultimately he has respect for other academics, and once he’s in a university setting, he starts to learn that he can benefit so much from all of the great minds around him.

Tony being a total nerd, sitting near the front during every lecture and committing every word the prof has to say to his memory. Yeah, he read the whole textbook in a few nights, but listening to lectures helps give him perspectives on things that he can’t get out of a book. He learns by putting up his hand and asks questions. He probably voluntarily asks for more extra and more challenging assignments… not for extra credit, just for fun.

Yes, Tony is a genius, and he blows his professors away when he sits down with a problem and refuses to stop trying until he figures it out (and then he figures it out in record time), or when he points out flaws in their research, or helps them work out the kinks in a problem they’ve been working on for years. He’s amazing. His brain astounds everyone. He can easily keep up with profs who have been experts for 30+ years. He runs circles around the other students without breaking a sweat. Even so, he’s there to learn… he does it with gusto and gets straight A+’s, but it’s not without any effort on his part.

Like, it’s totally understandable that we all fall into the “Tony gets bored and skips all his classes because they’re too easy” trope… but I’d love to see Tony facing some intellectual roadblocks, and having to fight his way through them. I just really want to see more of Tony approaching the learning process head on and absolutely decimating it, but not without having to stop at a few detours along the way. His genius is a gift and he is smart to the point where it astounds people who have been called geniuses their whole lives, but his drive and desire for knowledge give him the momentum to actually put that natural genius to use. In the end, that’s really his key to success.

avengers idly watching tony being choked. 🙂

This, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is why the accords are necessary. Because of you can’t trust the avengers to ask questions first and to help their own team mate, them how can you trust them to save you. The Avengers need to held accountable, because when they aren’t, they don’t even help their own people how could they help another. They may not even think they’ve done anything wrong.

I still don’t really understand why of all psychological terms they (read: Natasha, not a trained psychologist) went with in Iron Man 2, they went with narcissism.

Psychologically, ‘narcissism’ has a different meaning than ‘extreme love of oneself,’ which does not fit Tony at all. According to google it means:

extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one’s own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.

And I mean, it’s not that I can’t see that, in a way? It’s just that the whole movie you have Tony basking in adoration for the Stark Expo or just being Iron Man and doing attention-seeking acts, but it wasn’t done because it made him happy, it was done out of fear because he was dying. And Natasha’s right there and she’s not stupid, she can see this (and in fact she actively encourages his downward spiral at one point but that is a completely different story about Tony forever has the right to throw SHIELD out on their asses.)

Not many Tony Stark fans are going to tell you the man doesn’t have an ego (see: “I just build everything and make everyone look cool” from AoU) but there’s something to be said for being humble and there’s something to be said for literally building everything the Avengers are using and enjoying some bragging rights.

But the point is, I could see ‘egotism’ or egomania being the word they/she went with because Tony, for all that I just made excuses and for all that he ‘took care’ of Pepper and Rhodey, didn’t really seem to take their actual feelings into account in Iron Man 2 and was pretty damned focused on himself. Understandable but also kinda messed up.

And nevermind that narcissism as Natasha was talking about it is an actual mental disorder. And now the darker parts of the fandom use the word like its gospel.

It just – it doesn’t reflect badly on just Tony, but Natasha and SHIELD too because these people are supposed to be intelligent. “Iron Man, yes. Tony Stark not recommended” well good goddamn you have just missed basically the entirety of Tony’s actual personality, well done you super-spies you.

Two times that Rhodey hands Tony something

#where the second time is basically his goddamn heart #something they spent a good chunk of the movies pointing out how important that secret is #that only certain people could be trusted with the thing that is keeping tony alive #and not only does rhodey get to hold it #he gets to look into it and see how it functions #he sees the goddamn core of the thing #but no they’re not shippable #totes bros (tags via sigmundite)

Don’t forget that Rhodey replaces the palladium core with no direction from Tony whatsoever. He knows where the extra cores are, pops out the old one, puts a new one in, and hands it off to Tony without a word. Which means that he’s worked with the arc reactor before. Which means that Tony explicitly trusts Rhodey. With his life.

a list of compromises offered by tony during cacw:

  • we agree to this now or it’ll be done to us later
  • we don’t have to follow shield or hydra, but we should follow the UN
  • i just want steve as part of the team, let’s come to an agreement and we can forget all this bad blood
  • wanda has to be in a prison or contained, and i’d rather put her up in a house where she can be comfortable and kept company by vision until i can have her reinstated
  • i’ll admit bucky to a psychiatric facility in the US where he can be cared for and kept safe
  • sign the accords now for show, and we can amend all the details later
  • i believe you that bucky is innocent and that zemo is behind this, and i’m coming to help you to fight him even though you didn’t trust me enough to explain any of this

Rise your hand if it’s has been moths after CW and you still hate the fucking letter.

I loathe that damned letter.

Actually? I’m going to rip that steaming pile of diarrheal cow excrement apart line by line, right here, right now.

Tony, I’m glad you’re back at the compound.-Tony, you made it out of the Siberian hellhole that I left you in after smashing up your arc reactor and beat the shit out of you after traumatizing you emotionally. Good for you! (And how does Steve know that Tony made it back? Does he have access to the Compound’s security cams, did Tony announce it, or, did Steve just guess?).

I don’t like the idea of you rattling around a mansion by yourself.-Gee, maybe if you hadn’t been an enormous jackass Rogers, Tony might not be left alone!

We all need family.-What a delightful thing to say to someone who watched their parents killed in front of them by the man who you claim is not only your best friend, but your brother Steve! Do go on.

The Avengers are yours, maybe more so than mine.-WHAT AVENGERS?! You mean Vision, whose base code was founded on JARVIS’ (Tony’s friend and companion, who was destroyed and no one seemed to care aside from maybe Bruce, and then died to bring Vision to life), and is essentially Tony’s child; and Rhodey, who is Tony’s oldest and best friend, has stood by him through so much shit, and has been disabled as a result of this stupid conflict. Those Avengers, Steve? Nat backed you Steve, and went into the wind, Thor and Bruce are gone, T’Challa has his own responsibilities and is protecting your Brosicle besides, Peter’s just a kid, and all the other reindeer don’t trust Tony. So what Avengers are you talking about?

I’ve been on my own since I was 18.-What the actual fuck?! Then what the hell was Bucky Barnes?! The entire emotional arc of the whole damned movie revolves around you protecting your best friend, and this one sentence basically blows it to hell. What about Peggy? What about the Howling Commandoes? Do they mean a damned thing?!

I never really fit in anywhere, even in the Army.-You mean you didn’t fit in with the squad with your best friend, soldiers you personally chose, your love interest running intelligence, running around blowing the hell out of Hydra?

Pro forma bitching aside, I can almost understand this one. Steve grew up Irish in the ‘20′s and ‘30′s, experienced prejudice there, was too small and sick to probably really work or be accepted (aside from Bucky and his Mom), feels like the dancing monkey until he joins up with the Commandoes, gets frozen, wakes up in a world where most everything he knows and loves is either gone or so radically different it boggles the mind, gets thrown into a team filled with personality conflicts to save the world, and then it turns out his old enemy has reorganized itself and is using his supposedly dead friend as an assassin. So from a certain view, Steve does have a point here.

My faith’s in people, I guess. Individuals.-”As long as they stand with me and believe as I believe!”

And I’m happy to say, for the most part, they haven’t let me down.-”Except for you, Tony. I have no faith or belief in you, or anyone who stands with you, or anything you’ve done. ”

Which is why I can’t let them down either-”Again, aside from you, Tony, because you’ve let me down from the moment we met.”

Locks can be replaced, but maybe they shouldn’t be.-”I’m going to break my teammates out of Super-Gitmo, because they’re there for following me and breaking the law in my ridiculous crusade, and I’m shocked that they’re facing the consequences! That jail shouldn’t exist!” So, we shouldn’t have a place to put supervillains? And yeah, Team Cap are heroes, they should not have been dumped in some black site prison, solely at Ross’ discretion. Hmm….I wonder if the Accords had some provisions about imprisonment? I wonder if Tony could have used his money to hire a crack team of lawyers, including maybe some people who worked on the Guantanamo Bay cases, and would be delighted to help out some genuine heroes out of a jam!

I know I hurt you, Tony.-This should have been the first line. Not buried halfway down the letter, the very first line. Steve should have been saying, “I know I hurt you Tony, and I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” He should have realized not only that he hurt his teammate, but why.

I guess I thought by not telling you about your parents I was sparing you, but I can see now that I was really sparing myself, and I’m sorry.– You were sparing Tony?! Bullshit. Steve is actually right, here. He was sparing himself-sparing himself from having to tell Tony, “Hydra killed your parents, and used my best friend as the weapon to do it.” Tony had a right to know about that. Maybe if Steve had told Tony, Zemo’s plan never would have happened. Maybe Tony would have dealt with it, processed that, and would have helped (Tony was offering to to help in Berlin!). Maybe Tony never would have gotten over it, and told Steve to go fuck himself. We don’t know, and we never will, because Steve took that opportunity away. For someone who yelled at Tony about keeping secrets? Steve isn’t Captain Transparent.

And that I’m sorry at the end-what a crock. That should have been in every other line, at the beginning, wherever he could have shoved it in. But you know what? It’s there, it’s an emotional upswing, maybe Steve can recover with the rest of the let-

Hopefully one day you can understand-

. ….And emotional upswing, pissed down the toilet. This is the biggest piece of crap in that POS letter. “Hopefully you can understand one day Tony, that I was lying to you, hiding things from you, using your money and resources to help find my friend and equip the team and build us a new Compound,

for your own good.”

What the hell is Tony supposed to understand? That Steve Rogers is right, will always be right, and whatever he does is for the best, no matter who it harms as long as Captain America gets to be right? That sentence pisses me off to no end.

I wish we agreed on the Accords, I really do.-No, you really don’t, Steve. That’s the second biggest piece of crap in the damned letter. You don’t want to agree with Tony, hell, you don’t even want to come to some form of reasonable compromise! You want Tony to agree with you, wholeheartedly and unreservedly, and anything you say otherwise is b.s.

I know you’re doing what you believe in, and that’s all any of us can do.-”Especially since what I believe in is doing whatever I want to ‘protect’ people and fulfill my raging hero complex!”

That’s all any of us should…..– “Again, except for you Tony, because what you, your friends, and 117 countries believe in affects me, and that means it’s wrong.”

So no matter what, I promise you, if you need us – if you need me – I’ll be there.-

“Because you’re Tony Stark, and inevitably you’re going to fuck up, and you’ll have no choice but to call me in so I can save the day like always! When the Accords tie your hands, never fear, for I, Steve Rogers, shall be there to pull your ass out of the fire yet again, and I, Steve Rogers, shall be so magnanimous as to forgive you for your trespasses against me.”

As if you couldn’t tell, I have Feelings about the letter, and feel a bit better about splashing them out.

Honestly after that fucking excuse of a letter I lost all faith in Steve and he just straight up became one of the characters I actively despise.
