Since this is the midseason break, I thought I’d make a list of things I think the show could improve on going forward, and things that they’re doing perfectly.
So, Stuff The Show Could Improve On
- A little less gosh darn heterosexuality. Rein it in. Dan and Chloe you have an excuse with, but heavenly beings aren’t going to be het as default. Ancient sexuality was so much more complicated than that.
- Raise the stakes, not the scale. The big murder sprees take a lot of the mystery out, and ruin some of the ‘whodunnit’ fun of last season. Rather than turning up the body count or gore factor, keep the murders small and intimate.
- Focus a little more on the procedural aspect, don’t be afraid to bring in a little realism. How is Chloe writing down these bizarre happenings in paperwork? What happens when she has to testify in court? How does pay work at Lux? What’s her babysitting schedule look like? Small doses of the down to earth can help ground the characters and keep the show from veering into the bizarre. Don’t be afraid to throw a court order or a sick kid in to make things complicated. Real life is weird.
- Remember to add some pathos for the minor characters around everyone. What about the Richards family, how are they coping? The grieving widow, the rookie cop on the scene of the crime Chloe has to comfort. Surrounding the main characters with a tapestry of emotions makes everything feel more natural and earned, and little moments mean a lot.
- Be heartfelt, but not kitschy. Make those heartwarming moments more earned. Make us struggle for them.
- Don’t be afraid to fight god. I know you have a big viewer base to keep happy, and having the Big Guy as a major character is a risky move. I definitely don’t think you should go for it right out of the ball park. But it it feels right, go for it. Pull a comic book series and kill God if you have to. I’m behind you.
Stuff To Keep Doing
- Tom Ellis. Singing. You’ve got a great formula there, don’t break it.
- The show is definitely sex positive, though sometimes it struggles a little. Still doing way better than most shows on television. Keep that up.
- Character development. It’s amazing. Keep it moving forward.
- Female led storylines and arcs. Perfection. I love it.
- Female friendships. Same.
- Mothers as well rounded characters. Just rad.
- Doing your own thing mythology wise. I love how this show doesn’t follow the basic and obvious Revelations plot line. Instead it forges its own path, which is so great. Keep throwing us well backed up, sensible curveballs.
- Using the acting talent to it’s fullest. Every emotional beat is amazing. Comedic timing is perfect. Keep that up. Overall writers and cast have done an awesome job.
