Merlin was the worst servant ever because he didn’t know how to be one, so instead of just following orders he took care of Arthur like he’d do with someone he loved, getting to know the kind of person he was, treating Arthur the way he has always wanted to be treated (”All my life I’ve been treated as if I’m special. I just want to be treated like everyone else.”). It got to the point Arthur didn’t want to change him for a more efficient servant, and spent hours looking for him around the castle when Merlin didn’t go to wake him up. 

#and you know what #it’s not like merlin spoiled him all the time #he was gentle with arthur #that’s true #but he also yelled at him when Arthur didn’t want to listen to reason#and he called him an ass whenever he acted like one #and Arthur let him #because this… peasant #wants to protect him #this clumsy servant prefers to face /a dragon/ with him than watch Arthur die #HE SPENT AN ENTIRE NIGHT SITTING ON THE FLOOR BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WANT ARTHUR TO FEEL LIKE HE WAS ALONE #taking all of that into account… is it really that surprising Arthur fell for Merlin?
